Small Victories

I was just saying to a friend "it's the small victories that make our day" and headed on over here to write about my own small victory. I stopped by my friend's blog first to see what's new and found she's had some small victories herself.

In the Mamahood, the small victories aren't really that small. They are huge accomplishments. They are what keeps us going through all the battles. If you don't have kids, you might not understand. It may not seem like a big deal to you when one of your mommy friends says "my kid went pee pee in the potty!" or "I got my kid to brush his teeth on his own!" or "My kid sat through story time at the library!" But these are huge deals to the moms. Especially with the moms who have high maintenance kids like my Lil Man.

Today, I won a victory over him and the T.V. It made me feel good to accomplish this particular task of having him cooperate with me. For once. I felt like I was ready to take on health care reform. Ready to take on tea baggers the world over. You know, for five minutes anyway before the next battle started.

Two weeks ago, I was able to get Lil Man to sit on the rug in the story time room at the library. He sat on the rug when she was reading the books. He didn't get up and run around the room or run out the door. He didn't really listen to the story, but he sang the songs and he did the craft.

This, my friend, is a big deal for me. It's an accomplishment in the Mamahood. A proud moment that I celebrated by bragging to everyone who would listen. I don't care if it seems small to anyone else. It's huge for me and for my son.

It's the brief moments like this when you think you're not screwing up too bad, you must be doing something right. It's those brief moments that I am thankful for. And at the end of the day, I cling to the victory, even if I lost every other battle the rest of the day.
