Sense and Sensi-WHAT?! Part 2

My literary soul saving continues. I just realized I should be providing chapters my quotes are from, but I am not going back through it to find it, so you're on your own bitches!

Elinor could have given her immediate relief by suggesting the possibility of its being Miss Morton's mother, rather than her own, whom they were about to behold; but instead of doing that, she assured her, and with great sincerity, that she did pity her, - to the utter amazement of Lucy, who, though really uncomfortable herself, hoped at least to be an object of irrepressible envy of Elinor.

Once again, Jane Austen has made me giggle. Such a petty thing to think and write and I love it. After this, Elinor is slighted by her sister-in-law and her sister-in-law's mother. And she just smiles in amusement because she knows what will happen when they find out that Lucy has been secretly engaged to their precious Edward.

and Marianne, when called on for hers, offended them all by declaring that she had no opinion to give, as she had never thought about it.

And Marianne has won me over at last. She continues to win me over when she defends her sister against Mrs. Ferrars who is a real bitch. She'd  be a nightmare mother-in-law. And Lucy still really is stupid beyond belief. All she can talk about after meeting Mrs. Ferrars is how "affable" she was. Oh cheese and rice, Lucy! Did you not notice how they  spoke of  Miss Morton in comparison of Elinor? Did you not see how rude they were to Elinor?! They are trying to get Edward engaged to Miss Morton and they despise Elinor because they know Edward's regard for her! Oh geez. Lucy Steele, you are dumb.

they were not only all three together, but were together without the relief of any other person.

Edward. Lucy. Elinor. Awkward! I've so been there...

Edward remaining completely uncomfortable throughout the visit is awesome. Because that's how men behave around too many women. Especially too many women he's been with. Granted, he's no Willoughby and he's too much of a gentleman to ever "get with" any lady. But you know what I mean.

Mr. Palmer refuses to say out loud that his baby is the cutest alive. In fact, he thinks all babies are the same. Everyone is furious except the Miss Dashwoods who could care less. I'm beginning to think Jane Austen was less impressed with children. It's kind of refreshing, actually. Yes, I'm a mom. But I'm a little bit weary of the whole "babies complete you" thing. As if you can't truly be a happy woman without kids. Uh...yeah you can.

Moving on. Marianne and Elinor went to London, by the way, with Mrs. Jennings. Marianne's heart is broken by Willoughby. She spends daaaaaaayyysss weeping and everyone starts saying she "suffers from a nervous condition." Her lovely brother starts talking about her like she's a spinster. I hate that guy.

Marianne and Elinor finally get to leave London after a big bruhaha when Fanny Dashwood finds out Lucy Steele is engaged to her brother. She gets downright ghetto and beats her ass. Edward refuses to back off the engagement. He is cast out.

Marianne gets really sick. Almost dies. And then....Willoughby. Seriously?! Seriously, Willoughby, you just had to show up. For what? Ooooohh you want people to see your side of things. You really did love Marianne, but you didn't want to be poor. Ah, okay. I kind of feel a bit of pity for you since you are so unhappily married and you didn't write that horrible letter, but your wife instructed you what to write. Yes, a bit of compassion...

What I felt on hearing that your sister was dying - and dying, too, believing me the greatest villain upon earth, scorning, hating me in her latest moments -..."

Okay seriously?! You lost me. If I thought for one second the above meant that Willoughby wanted to tell Marianne he loved her and that's why he felt that way, I'd say it was sweet. But this is Willoughby. He is selfish. And arrogant. Like Marianne would be thinking of him in her last. God, he's full of himself.

And this is where I finish for now. I am almost finished with this book. Huzzah!
