New addition to mah washing machine

Two weeks ago, I ordered a sample packet of soap nuts. I heard about them a year ago and have been wanting to try them. I finally got the go ahead from the Husband.
Husband calls them "soapy nuts" cause he's immature like that.
Okay, I call them soapy nuts too. Anyway. I didn't just get the nuts, I also got the liquid stuff as well.

Right off, the nuts (which are actually berries, but I'm being immature today) stink. They kind of smell like vinegar. My first load was some sheets Mr. Jackson peed on in his sleep. Put the sheets in, turned on the hot water, threw the nuts in. When the wash was done, I pulled the sheets out and ta da! They smelled.....they smelled.....well, they didn't smell like anything. They just smelled clean. I put them in the dryer, no dryer sheet (I've actually been using white vinegar in my fabric softener thing in my wash for a long time and haven't used a dryer sheet in I don't know how long). They came out soft as anything. Okay, awesome.

After that, I used the liquid to wash a small load of laundry, including a shirt that I'd spilled some salsa on. I didn't pre-treat the stain (the website does say to do that, but I didn't. It was a relatively fresh stain). The load came out clean. I loved the way my clothes smelled after. Even though the liquid has lavender and tea tree in it, my clothes didn't smell like that.

The final test was Jackson and Morgan coming into contact with the clothes after having been washed in the new stuff. Last year I tried 7th Gen's free and clear laundry detergent and Jackson got hives. Guess what? No reaction.

Soap nuts are a huge win in my family. If you're looking for a better, more environmentally friendly, sustainable way to clean your clothes I recommend soap nuts. You know what else I love about soap nuts though? Their all-purpose use. You can make it into a shampoo, you can clean your counters, bathrooms, floors with this stuff, apparently. Although, I haven't tried any of those methods since I purchased the sample packet for to do my laundry.

I heart soapy nuts.

  1. Good to hear they're working out for you! I may try some in the future. So far our homemade laundry detergent is working well, and I think this batch may last forever. ;)
